Hey Oppo!

I have a question which, I am sure, many of you have an opinion.

I drive about one mile to and from work every day (for a total of almost two miles!).

About once or twice a week, I drive 30 miles continuously at up to 80 mph.

How much damage do you think I'm doing by my short work commute trips?

Thanks for all your advice. Here's a Super20 for your efforts.

You're putting way too many miles on your car on your commute. Try to cut down by way of public transport or moving closer to work.

Depends on the weight of oil you use mostly, the weather, the car you use and how often you change oil. If I don't know these factors then, I can't give you a good answer.

Mobile1 0W-40. Philadephia (though it's been a VERY cold winter so far). Every 5,000 miles.

Normal wear and tear will occur. If you see mayonnese under the oil cap after the 30 miles drive, try to drive more to make sure the condensation is completely burned off.

Well your car will definitely last longer not doing it than doing it. Hell if I lived a mile from work I would just ride my bike when it wasn't raining, it doesn't take but maybe 10 minutes to ride a mile on a bike. If you'd like a suggestion I really like surly's bikes.

Agreed. I wish I could take a bike - unfortunately, half the route is a bridge that you must walk the bike over (riding is not allowed on the bridge - and it's enforced!), so it kind of defeats the purpose.

If it's only a mile I would maybe even walk or run during nice weather(I saw the bike comments).

Realistically, it's not hurting the car. However, I would maybe drive it long enough to warm it up.
